#133 Croatia residency toolbox

4-24 September 2023 Residency in Rijeka, Croatia. Topic: SUSTAINABILITY   The three-week Rijeka residency explored one of today's burning issues - SUSTAINABILITY - from the perspective of 12 participants - dance artists, curators and producers working in the performing arts from four countries: Georgia, Italy, Poland and Croatia. In the collective reflection on the theme of SUSTAINABILITY, the residency, with the help of Croatian coordinators, was designed so that the work would take place in three different contexts: - in the sea, - in the forest, - in a recycling yard, - in a dance studio. Working in the sea was particularly inspiring as Rijeka is a major Adriatic port. Participants explored the somatic relationship between the body and seawater, the problem of floating plastic and its impact on the marine ecosystem. The warm-up dance training in pairs, led by participant and Croatian dance artist Jasna Čižmek Tarbuk, was interesting, focusing on the supportive anti-gravity and h...

#72 Residency in Croatia

I share some images that capture moments of work and rehearsals for Giulia Roversi's two choreographies, 'Passively Interacting with the “Outside World” and “Violet”, during the third week of the residency in Rijeka. Being part of the creative process as a performer in the choreographic work “Violet” by Giulia Roversi was challenging, enriching, and very valuable for me. This experience allowed me to integrate the shared theoretical-critical reflection with the practical-performative research conducted with residency participants, leading to the realization of the final performance.

#71 Residency in Croatia

Extract/teaser from the work I presented with Natia Bunturi on stage: Passively Interacting with the Outside World I worked on the narration of body lines and gestures enveloped into a fancy plastic dress, to question the audience on the paradoxes we live as society every day, plastic in our behavior, plastic in our care with the outside reality that surrounds us.

#70 Residency in Croatia

Testo: Sustain to sustain: workshop on the concept go gravity and weighting. We analyzed through movement how to take care and interact with our body and others', and with the space around. By  Giulia Roversi Testo: Sustain to sustain: radionica o konceptu gravitacije i ponderiranja.

#69 Residency in Croatia

This week was hard: too many information, thoughts and work. I enjoyed so much the workshop  with TheatreRe which gave me a lot of inspiration.  I chose to work with Xosilita thanks to her sensibility and availability. It was very beautiful to build  with her my concept “The Walk”.  Living with Italian girls, Claudia and Giulia, made me very happy and, in general, I created a big  connection with almost all of the artists involved in the residency.  I struggled in doing schedules and organizing all the timetable for rehearsals and performances.  But, at the end, we made it fabulously. Thank you to everybody. Život s talijanskim djevojkama, Claudijom i Gi...

#68 Residency in Croatia

I just came in Rijeka and I quickly got close to all the artists and got into the artistic flow. I was  observing everything without pretending to create: it is very helpful to step back for one moment  and just listen other ideas. Furthermore I used some times to walk and enjoy the landscape and to  feel my body muscles working hard for the thousand stairs in the city. Here it comes my idea  about our body as way of transport instead taking bus and car every time.  I came close to most of the artists feeling energies and enjoying their movements.  By Nyko Piscopo Tek sam došao u Rijeku i brzo sam se približio svim umjetnicima i ušao u umjetnički tok.

#67 Residency in Croatia

The third week of our residency was the most intense. On Monday, an excursion was organized to the river Riječina in hills in the hinterland of Rijeka. I used that time to look at all the materials I had recorded and created a montage related to the music. We realized that there is a lot of work and that we don't really have much time left for presentations, so we abandoned the concept of morning workshops that we were supposed to conduct and used all that time for rehearsals. Since I was performing in two plays (Natja's and Jacob's) and at the same time had my work designed for all the participants, Thursday and Friday turned into a full-time stay at the HKD. And to make things more complicated, one of my two computers I had just stopped working, and the other had bad sound output channel. Luckily my son has a lot of colleagues in the orchestra at the academy he is studying with, so he managed to find me a girl who jumped in with her laptop and helped us... so it was inten...

#66 Residency in Croatia

To Sustain During the second week of our residency, Giulia and I chose to delve into the fundamental essence of the concept of "sustainability." We aimed to transmute this term into a movement workshop, tracing it back to its roots. Returning to the Latin origins of the word “sustĭnēre”, we discovered meanings such as to sustain, defend, support, care for, and preserve. From there, we structured our workshop, centering on the concept of WEIGHT. This approach allowed us to explore the perception of our bodies, our relationships with others, and the surrounding environment. At the core of the activity was the act of perceiving one's own weight in relation to others, with the aim of collectively seeking physical and relational equilibrium, supporting one another. → A tension that should also exist for the planet, creating an ecosystem in which diverse forces coordinate to maintain balance and stability. We drew parallels between the activity and the overarching theme ...

Dancing Dialogues with the Landscape September 8, 2023, 7:48 PM.  These images capture brief glimpses of that intense exchange of ideas, emotions, and creativity that, at the end of the day, culminated in a dancing moment in dialogue with the landscape, bathed in the enveloping and enchanting light of a sunset over the sea. By Claudia Verdat Plesni dijalozi s krajolikom 8. rujna 2023. u 19.48 sati.

#64 Residency in Croatia

Second week started with an introduction to dance film making by Selena Beram, trans medial dramaturgist who gave new and fresh insight on how to approach dance dramaturgy and make dance videos.  We learned how to make a logline, one sentence description of a movie. Logline distils the important elements of a dance movie, main characters, setup, central conflict, or antagonist into clear concise teaser. We also exchange information about useful free applications for video editing and arrange help to the people that were interested to use video in their residency but have no experience in it. Therefore, I asked Nina And Selena to help me with that. Rest of the week to workshop and rehearsals. Claudia and Giulia addressing body weight. Then we had a two day workshop with Gabriella Stazio who brought us some of the Laban principles but through the perspective of modern choreographers she worked with. The week ended with Kamil workshop in which he used a combination of light exercises ...
