On Sunday the 28th I arrived in Tbilisi. Everyone's welcome and kindness made my arrival pleasant. The city, which I haven't fully known yet, looks neat and clean. The Soviet architecture stands out, especially that of some public buildings.
The center is surrounded by high mountains which can be reached by cablecar or by descending winding paths. The other morning, while the other participants were arriving, I reached the top of the peak on which stands a marble statue depicting a woman with a sword that protects the city. From above, as well as the panorama, I was able to enjoy some fresh air, since downstream the humidity can make the air a bit muggy.
As for the residency, thanks to the common interest in dance and art in general, it was easy to immediately start making the first friendships and professional collaborations. The first two nights, I was also able to start my research on the local LGBTQ community by interviewing a couple of people I met in a bar not far from our hotel.
On May 31st we went to Nikozi. A village bordering part of Georgian territory currently occupied by the Russians. We met the Bishop, an artist who has created a school where they teach music, shadow theatre, singing, ceramics and other artistic subjects. He told us about the children who managed to become successful musicians and then a beautiful story about a couple who didn't want to leave the village during the war. The visit concluded with a lunch characterized by numerous toasts which, apparently, Georgians usually make when there is wine at the table.
In short, a special day that made me reflect a lot on the good fortune, which we often take for granted, of living in a part of the world where, despite the problems, one does not live with the constant fear of a military invasion or a war.
On June 1st, however, we also started the 'physical' work with a workshop held by an American actor who works a lot with the body. The exercises he made us to do weren't new to me, but it was interesting to start researching stage presence. In the evening we went to a drag ball. Perhaps due to a series of precautions that had been suggested to us, I was expecting a different atmosphere. I had formed the idea of something hidden and clandestine. Instead, I was happy to see how well everything was organized and how people were completely at ease. Aside from the fun, we had a lot of performances by drag artists that today I was lucky enough to interview for my project.
