#18 Residency in Georgia

On the morning of June 3rd and 4th, I attended the workshop of Atsushi Kakumoto, a theatre director, who founded the Tokyo-based company d’UOMO ex machina. His work was focused on the control of body movements which are really important also in dance choreography. He was really precise in explaining us directions and ways of walking. But the day I got to the heart of my residency was the 5th of June. That day I gave a workshop in order to find performers for the choreography I intended to create during my stay in Georgia. To my surprise, there were about twenty people to attend it. Sandra Sok was responsable for the first part of the class while I led the second part. Assuming that all of us have parts of the body that we are ashamed of, emotions that we try to hide, things about ourselves that we would like to change because they are not socially accepted, I invited the participant to move starting from the part of their body or from the emotion they were thinking about. I wanted to prove that performing arts represent a safe place free from prejudice, in which we can freely express ourselves and where we can give importance and put in the spotlight also what we try to hide. For me was extremely interesting to see how, a few of them were able to immediately open a communication channel which allowed them to show something intimate and real about themselves. For many of the performers who were attending the class, it was much more complicated to stop thinking about the images they where projecting outward. They were still stuck in movements’ form and aesthetics.

Anyway, after the workshop everybody seemed to be happy about the experience and almost the totality of the participants wanted to repeat it. Since then, I continued to work with the sixteen guys who were interested in performing at the ‘Movement, Physical & Dance Theater International Festival’.

At the same time, every evening, I also decided to participate, as performer, into Kosta's project about refugees.

But our residency is not only interviews, workshops, research and choreography projects. Thanks to Levan and Iuri, we are also discovering the country. On June 9th we went to Marneuli. The peculiarity of this place is that the city is populated not only by Georgian, but also by Armenian and Azerbaijanis. The first part of our trip was really moving. We went to visit Tserakvi, where there is the museum dedicated to the writer Mikheil Javakhishvili. Once more the horrible things suffered by Georgian due to Russian imperialism, left me shocked and speechless. Then we assisted to a puppets show by an Armenian artist and, in a theatre, we attended an amazing performance of Georgian folk dance.

On June 10th we went to Sagarejo. The first place we visited was still under construction. It was the cultural space that Levan and Iuri are building into the wild nature of a hill close to Sagarejo village. It was very inspiring to see how they are making something so important for the local community and how they are thinking about the future of this country. Despite all the problems, there is a profound sense of proud to be Georgian, and this is admirable. After that, we went to a school in order to see folk dance and before going back to tbilisi, we also visited a beautiful monastery.

Our second week ended with a delicious dinner and many moving toasts.

DTA residency will stay for me as one of the unforgettable projects, the experience and impact it has left on me, will follow me for many years. Now let’s circle back and let me tell you all the details I find interesting within this final presentation's 10 days residency. Once we all arrived in Warsaw, Poland, we all together had a big meet up in the hotel to receive our accommodation keys and to get city transportation tickets, for us to make it easier to travel independently. Seeing our friends from previous residency was surprisingly overwhelming and we felt lucky & thankful that we met each other again within the project! The accommodation itself was really nice & clean, even though the space was small it was perfectly suitable for a solo traveler. Together with tickets we also have received vouchers from local stores to buy ourselves dinner products and vouchers for the local bakery downstairs, which was nice for breakfast/brunch options. After one day to rest and res...

#127 Final presentations in Poland

Re-connecting in final residency in Warsaw It was a great opportunity for me to be a part of dance residency EU Project "Dancing together again" and to connect to other colleagues from participating countries, first in Napoli, then finally meeting all colleagues in Warsaw who have participated in previous residencies in Tbilisi, Rijeka and Napoli. I am very grateful to be able to participate in this project as the residencies were a rare opportunity for me to be able to focus only on dance artistic process, without needing to take care of other everyday duties. The weather in Warsaw was much cooler than in my hometown Zagreb during summer, which I really liked. However, this time it affected me in such a way that after the first few days of residency I got sick with a high fever and was forced to spend a few days in my room before I recovered. This unexpected situation allowed me enough space to process all the new information about first impressions of Warsaw residency on ...
